Avoid it altogether. Anti - spyware is almost never free, and if it is, it's usually spyware or a virus thing itself. I have tried almost everything and had to later edit my registry from almost all of them. None were good that I tested, and the ones I did not test were the scan - then - pay type you mentioned. Try yahoo's 'anti - spy'. It's really not good, but it's actually free and does at least something. 'Spybot' is OK and free too. 'AVG FREE' is by far the best free anti - virus and yeah, totally free permanently. You will need the anti - spyware with it though. AVG has a payed version with anti - spyware, but go for the free with an independent anti - spyware. There's stuff like 'Avast' that sort of works, but the othe free stuff is INCREDIBLY annoying or useless. Oh, and important - at all costs do not download 'Antivirus 2009' or anything with a similar name. It is a fake antivirus, and actually one of the worst viruses out there. Also, it's the only virus with an update option for the user. No antivirus I have used so far can detect or remove it, and it took me weeks to hide it from my computer, but it's still in all kinds of little places. I had to do what I did manually, and it's almost not even enough. If you start to acci ly download it, unplug your computer. Also a temp - file deleter will help destroy tracking cookies if you do not find an anti - spyware. Try 'CCleaner'. It works reasonably and is entirely free
